Alon was founded in 1990 and has a local population of about 200 families today. Alon is a young, close-knit community with a diverse population that is composed of religious and secular families. They function together as an active community and firmly believe that coexistence is important today. Alon is about 15 kilometers east of Jerusalem, on the southern bank of Wadi Kelt, overlooking the spectacular landscape of the Judean Desert, Plains of Jericho and the Moab Mountains.

Educational institutions for the younger ages are based in the community, while the high school is located a few minutes away, near the main highway.  The majority of the residents work in Jerusalem and the nearby city of Maale Adumim.

The town offers vibrant communal and cultural activities. The town has Synagogues, Kindeargartens, a Gymboree, youth movement and higher Torah learning institute for young adults that is co-ed.
